Sex workers join violence battle

The Scarlet Alliance and CAAH have begun working together in the fight against violence against GLBT people and sex workers.

Last week the two groups held a rally on International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers, which included a march through Kings Cross.

“Today is the day sex workers across the world take a stand for justice, dignity and safety, and stand against the stigmas that stop us having equal rights under the law,” sex worker activist Julie Bates said at the rally.

“We are working citizens of the world and we want dignity as workers. Sex work is just work after all.”

The Scarlet Alliance has agreed to help with the International Day Against Homophobia rally in May.

The Scarlet Alliance recently completed a study into the needs of HIV positive sex workers — most of whom were gay men — that identified concerns about inconsistent laws between states and territories and stigma in government and health agencies.
