Hong Kong man arrested over prostitute deaths

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Hong Kong police on Tuesday arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the killings of four prostitutes over the past few days that had spread fear among sex workers and the public.

The man, a Hong Kong resident of Pakistani descent, was arrested at a ferry terminal in the early hours with the help of police in neighboring Macau.

“In his possession, we found two mobile phones which belonged to two of the victims,” said Steve Li, a senior police superintendent. The man was now in Hong Kong police custody, though he had not been formally charged.

Four sex workers have been killed since Saturday, with three of the women believed to have been strangled. All four had been operating out of their own flats. While there are no official statistics on the size of Hong Kong’s sex industry, experts say there are at least 100,000 women working at any given time, consisting mostly of a transient pool of women from China’s impoverished inland provinces.
