HONG KONG: Hong Kong police arrested a Pakistani man Tuesday in connection with the killings of four sex workers in the city within three days.

Police arrested the 24-year-old man early Tuesday in Hong Kong upon his return from the nearby city of Macau, Superintendent Steve Li said.

“We believe this arrested person had involvement in the series of offenses, in the series of murders,” Li told reporters.

He said police intend to file charges against the man soon, but are still investigating whether he was involved in all four crimes. There might be more arrests later, Li added.

Police recovered two mobile phones belonging to two of the victims from the Pakistani man when he was arrested, he said.

Four sex workers, aged 27 to 35, have been killed in Hong Kong since Saturday. Their bodies were found in apartments in the suburban New Territories and in a residential district on Hong Kong island on Saturday and Monday.

One woman was strangled with a shower hose, and the apartment where she had been found had been robbed, police said. Another body was found with a swollen forehead and injured jaw.

The two other women did not have obvious external wounds but also were apparently robbed.

Li said the motive for the killings was unclear.

Macau police assisted in Tuesday’s arrest, but Li declined to give details about when the Pakistani man went to the enclave, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) west of Hong Kong, and what he did there.
