Third man arrested over prostitute murders

HONG KONG — A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a prostitute, police said, the third arrest in a week in Hong Kong over the killings of sex workers here.Four women have been found murdered in this southern Chinese city this month, prompting fears about violent crime in one of the world’s safest major cities.

Police said late Friday they had arrested a man over the March 17 murder of a 27-year-old sex worker, and would keep him in custody overnight.

On Wednesday, a 24-year-old Hong Kong resident of Pakistani origin was charged with three counts of murder over the deaths of three sex workers, and on Thursday, a second man was arrested in connection with the murder of a fourth.

Under Hong Kong law, prostitution is legal if carried out by one woman operating alone in a single location, such as her apartment — a so-called “one-woman brothel.” Soliciting for sex is illegal.

Organizations representing sex workers have urged the government to amend the law to allow two women to work together for safety.

Hong Kong police have begun visiting all 2,000 one-woman brothels in the city to check no other sex workers have been killed and seek information which could help in the murder investigations, the South China Morning Post reported.

The four deaths brought the total number of murders here for the year to 14, according to the Post.

Many of Hong Kong’s sex workers are women from mainland China who enter the territory on tourist visas in the hope of making some money.
