Four Cayuga County residents have been charged with promoting prostitution in Cortland County.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Department said that after it responded April 10 to a report of a possible robbery at 6862 West Bennett Hollow Road in the town of Preble, officers were told that five people had entered the residence and stolen money. Further investigation led to the arrests of three women from Auburn and one from Port Byron.

A news release from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department said the women had been conducting “prostitution behavior” at several farms where migrant workers work and live, in at least four surrounding counties.

AS, 31, of ___ Auburn, was charged with third-degree promoting prostitution, a felony, and fifth-degree conspiracy, a misdemeanor; WB, 19, of ___., Auburn was charged with three misdemeanors: prostitution, fourth-degree promoting prostitution, and fifth-degree conspiracy; LD, 20, of ___., Auburn, was charged with three misdemeanors: prostitution, fourth-degree promoting prostitution, and fifth-degree conspiracy; and ST, 27, of ___, Port Byron, was charged with third-degree promoting prostitution, a felony, and the misdemeanors of petit larceny and fifth-degree conspiracy.

The women were all arraigned in the town of Preble Court on April 16.

In October 2006, T was one of three people charged after a 10-month investigation by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office into complaints that migrant workers on farms in Fleming and Scipio were being victimized by thefts related to an alleged prostitution ring.

At that time, T was charged with the felonies of second-degree robbery and second-degree burglary and the misdemeanors of petit larceny and fourth-degree promoting prostitution. She pleaded guilty in Fleming Town Court on Jan. 7, 2007 to the petit larceny charge and was sentenced to 89 days in Cayuga County Jail and $1,5000 restitution.
