NY: Councilman Calls For A Crackdown On Cyberspace Prostitution

June 23, 2008One city lawmaker held a news conference yesterday to call for a crackdown on those who use cyberspace to promote prostitution.

City Councilman Eric Gioia says the majority of postings on websites such as Craigslist that advertise erotic services are just thinly disguised advertisements for prostitution.

Gioia says his staff investigated hundreds of ads on Craigslist and found 85 percent were solicitations for prostitution. He’s calling on the NYPD to boost its vigilance of the Internet.

‘Law enforcement has to recognize that prostitution has moved off the street corner and onto the internet and we have to use 21st century technology to combat it,’ said Gioia.

NY1 has reached out Craigslist for comment, but have not yet received aresponse.
