The family of the woman whose bones were found on Albuquerque’s West Mesa last week is speaking out about her disappearance and how they are coping with the news.

Victoria Chavez was 24-years-old when she vanished.

Family members say the mother of two had some ups and downs in life and that they won’t get closure until the person responsible for her death is caught.

“She was a beautiful girl, very friendly, helpful,” said Chavez’s stepfather Ambrose Saiz.

Saiz has been Victoria Chavez’s stepdad ever since she was a little girl.

On Monday, Saiz and Chavez’s mother found out that it was Chavez’s remains police discovered out on the West Mesa last week.

“It hit us like a ton of bricks,” Saiz said.

Police also found two other sets of human bones, also believed to be the remains of women.

Investigators think all three bodies may have been discarded around the same time and possibly by the same person.

In March of 2004, Saiz says he picked up Chavez from Bob’s Burgers off Central and Atrisco, where she worked. After returning home, the mother of two girls met up with a guy and was never seen by her family again.

Saiz says they thought Chavez was just living out of state.

“She got in a little trouble just like everybody else, going down the wrong road, but she came back and was doing wonderful and then this happens,” Saiz said.

Police say Chavez was a known prostitute and drug user.

“I don’t know her past or what she was doing when she wasn’t home, but when she was here with us, she was respectful, she was a good mother,” Saiz said.

Investigators were able to identify Chavez quickly because when her family reported her missing, they gave police dental records.

It will likely take months for police to identify the other two sets of remains.

Police think its possible even more human remains could be buried in the area.
