OSHKOSH — Authorities arrested a 33-year-old Oshkosh woman on Wednesday for running a prostitution service in her home while her husband was gone and her child was at school.
The arrest marks the second undercover investigation by the Oshkosh Police Department of local women who offered to perform sexual acts for pay through the Craigslist online advertising service.
In the most recent case, the woman used the Web site to post information about her services, which she offered out of her home in the 1xxxx block of Otter Avenue for $125 per session, Oshkosh Police Detective Paul Frey said.
The woman had a regular customer base, Frey said, and started offering the services last summer. She said she used the money she earned to pay bills.
In January, police arrested seven women for prostitution following a four-month investigation and charged two in connection with the allegations.
Charges were dropped against one of the women because she only performed a sex act while a detective watched.
The other case — in which M P, 30, of Neenah, is accused of offering to perform a sex act with a detective — is still pending.
While Craigslist provides space for “erotic services” on their Web site, Craiglist CEO Jim Buckmaster said in an e-mail to The Northwestern that efforts are being made to stop the illegal activity.
The Web site created an “erotic services” section at the request of users who did not want ads for escorts and erotic dancing in other areas of the site, according to Craigslist.com.
In November, Craigslist announced plans to require credit card payments for erotic services ads in order to allow it to obtain advertisers’ identities and also to help law enforcement track prostitution.
