IL: Mother, daughter charged with keeping house of prostitution in Berkeley

June 9, 2009

From the outside, the home at the corner of Hawthorne and Hillside Avenues in Berkeley looks like any other home on the quiet street.

But the pretty pink flowers along the walkway were only a facade for what police say was going on inside.

On June 3 members of Hillside and Berkeley police departments along with Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department executed a search warrant at Hawthorne Avenue after a three-month investigation involving alleged prostitution.

Eight people were taken into custody and evidence was recovered from the residence, according to police.

K “Big Kim” M, 49, who lives at the residence along with her daughter K P, 19, were charged with felony pandering and keeping a house of prostitution.

C N, 21, of Hickory Hills, was charged with prostitution.

K S, 30, of South Elgin, was charged with solicitation of a prostitute and possession of marijuana.

N and S were released after posting $100 bond. M is being held on $50,000 bond and P is being held on a $25,000 bond.

Hillside Police Chief Joseph Lukaszek said four other people were arrested but were released without charges because at the time of the execution of a search warrant they were not in the process of committing any acts involving prostitution.

Neighbors, however, didn’t seem surprised by the arrests.

Fred Staron, 85, said he had not seen anything unusual at the residence in the past. He’s seen the mother and daughter walking down the street on occasion, but that’s about it.

Two sisters in the neighborhood said it looked like the house looked as if it had many visitors in the past.

“There were always a lot of cars in front of the house,” they said.

M and P’s court date is June 12. N and S’s court date is June 23.
