A senior judge has been suspended while allegations printed about his private life in a tabloid newspaper are investigated, it emerged today.

The Office for Judicial Complaints (OJC) said Judge Gerald Price QC would not be able to work during the inquiry into allegations made in the News of the World about him and a male prostitute.

Judge Price, who earns £128,296 a year, normally sits in Swansea, Carmarthen and Cardiff crown courts, although he has not worked since the article appeared.

The 60-year-old has stood unsuccessfully at three general elections as a Conservative parliamentary candidate and has been an Anglican lay preacher for 40 years.

A spokesman for the OJC said: “Having considered the allegations against Judge Price, the lord chief justice and lord chancellor have decided that he should be suspended pending the outcome of the investigation into his conduct.”

The OJC was set up three years ago to handle complaints about the personal conduct of all judicial office holders in England and Wales and some judicial office holders who sit in tribunals in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Jack Straw is the lord chancellor and Lord Judge is the lord chief justice.
