A Brazilian immigrant who made her way in the United States as an exotic dancer performing in Boston-area clubs was found brutally murdered yesterday morning outside her Everett apartment building, authorities said.

Sheila Santos, 26, a dancer at Alex’s Restaurant in Stoughton, was found by her building superintendent at 4:32 a.m., said Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone. He said Santos suffered serious, obvious injuries, but declined to say how she was killed.

Investigators said Santos left her job at Alex’s at 1:15 a.m. and drove directly to her apartment at 154 Main St. Leone said Santos was attacked between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m. The building superintendent happened upon her body two hours later.

Leone is asking people who were around Santos’ home during the early-morning hours to share whatever they may have witnessed with authorities.

“We’re asking for the public’s help for anything they know or what they might have heard or seen,” he said.

Leone said Santos lived alone and has two sisters in the area who have been notified of her death. He said the Brazilian consulate is contacting Santos’ family in Brazil.

Prior to working at Alex’s, Santos was a dancer at King Arthur’s Lounge in Chelsea, Leone said.

Leone declined to discuss a motive for the killing and said her neighborhood will be saturated with police.

“We don’t want to characterize the nature of the killing such that we provide a false sense of security within the community,” Leone said. “However, that area and the area surrounding the area of the killing will be saturated with police officers for the time being.”

The incident left residents rattled.

“My wife is pregnant. She’s scared. She’s in the building,” said a man who has lived in the same apartment building as Santos for three years. “I don’t want to leave her there all day.”
