EVERETT, Mass. — As the investigation into the slaying of an exotic dancer from Everett continued Saturday, sources said that one of the people being questioned by police is a man who had expressed a romantic interest in the 26-year-old woman.

NewsCenter 5’s Cheryl Fiandaca reported that Sheila Santos, who was found dead outside her apartment early Friday morning, had spurned the romantic advances of the man.

Santos was a Brazilian immigrant who was employed as a dancer at Club Alex’s in Stoughton. Police said she was killed shortly after she finished a shift at the club and left to return home.

Family members said that Santos had grown increasingly worried in recent weeks that she was being followed home.

“Last week, she told me she didn’t want to work there anymore, because she was scared,’’ sister Ana Santos told The Boston Globe. “She told me she couldn’t wait to change apartments.’’

Police were not ready Saturday to say that the slaying was not a random act, but investigators said that evidence will likely lead to a prosecution in the case.

“The investigation is narrowing as we speak, and we fully expect it to be a successful homicide investigation,’’ said Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone.

As police continued to question coworkers and witnesses, Santos’ family gathered at her Main Street apartment in the afternoon, deciding on the final arrangements to transport her body back to Brazil for her funeral.

“She is … a nice girl, sweet girl. A nice heart,” said coworker Lydia Souza. “The father and mother are waiting for her over there. Right now it’s so hard for everybody.”
