Simon Cowell caught up in ‘X Factor’ prostitute scandal

Music mogul Simon Cowell has refused to kick an escort off his hit British talent show “The X Factor,” insisting, “We haven’t banned prostitutes.”

Chloe Mafia, 20, has made it past the first stage of the competition, despite tabloid reports suggesting the wannabe pop star had been working as a $240-an-hour prostitute.

And Cowell is adamant the single mom will not be axed because of her controversial activities.

He tells The Sun newspaper, “We can’t just take people off the show because they might do something that upsets some people. If a person applies to be on ‘The X Factor’ it’s obvious to me that they want to do something better with their life.”

Cowell, who quit as a judge on “American Idol” in May, is currently in talks to bring his “X Factor” show to the U.S.

Attorneys general in 18 states demanded that Craigslist remove its adult services section last week, the latest clash in a long-running conflict over online sexual ads that is likely to lead to a court battle, congressional debate or both, legal experts say.

“Eventually we’re going to see something,” said Jason Schultz, assistant professor at the UC Berkeley School of Law. “There has been political pressure building to try to pass new laws or to sue Craigslist criminally.” Continue reading

World Cup Avoids Flood Of Sex Workers

by Anders Kelto
July 6, 2010

In South Africa, many feared there would be a huge influx of sex workers to
profit off the tourists gathered for the soccer fest. But for the most part
the fears seem to have been unfounded.

From NPR News, this is ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. Im Melissa Block.

And Im Robert Siegel.

When the World Cup kicked off several weeks ago, it was widely reported that thousands of prostitutes would flock to the country’s nine host cities. And many feared that international traffickers would try to cash-in on the huge influx of tourists by importing sex workers. Well, that hasnt happened nearly as much as anticipated.

Anders Kelto has our report from Cape Town.

(Soundbite of conversations and music)

ANDERS KELTO: In the heart of Cape Town’s central business district is Long Street, a late night destination for those seeking a taste of South African nightlife. Music thumps from the dozens of bars and clubs that line the street, as a never-ending stream of taxis crawls along the road. And like many cities, visitors here are enticed to enter some of the area’s seedier establishments and to pay for sex. Continue reading

CalOSHA Sez: Almost All Adult Movies Are Non-Compliant

Posted Jun 29th, 2010 06:07 PM by Mark Kernes

LOS ANGELES—Those who showed up at the Cal/OSHA Advisory Meeting on Bloodborne Pathogens in the Adult Film Industry today expecting a discussion of whether condoms should be mandated in adult movies were in for a surprise: According to both Cal/OSHA inspector Deborah Gold and agency attorney Amy Martin, condoms are already required for sex scenes, and any production that doesn’t use them is breaking the law.

“I’d just like to make something very clear,” Gold said at one point. “Right now, the standard mandates the use of condoms, so people who have come here and think that we’re arguing about whether we’re going to mandate the use of condoms need to understand that the current status quo is Continue reading

Older story- Australia: The Porn Report

A book review by Danny Yee © 2008 http://dannyreviews.com/

A study of the production and consumption of pornography in Australia, The Porn Report is based on a three year project which involved a survey of a thousand Australian consumers, detailed analysis of the fifty most popular DVD titles from the largest distributors, and interviews with producers. This is augmented with additional research and some general background, beginning with a general history of pornography, drawing on Walter Kendrick’s The Secret Museum.

The survey of pornography users was not random, but was broad enough to demonstrate that the common stereotypes are wrong: unsurprisingly, given that pornography users make up about a third of Australian adults, they are fairly Continue reading

Sydney: Male escort lured to hotel room for fake ‘hit’

BELLINDA KONTOMINAS COURTS
April 9, 2010

WHEN Paul Dunshea was called to a room at the Hilton Hotel, the male escort had no idea he was about to be the star in a prime-time current affairs show.

Mr Dunshea, who is now a full-time student and goes by the name Aalex Valentino, thought it unusual that there were two men in the room, but he complied when he was asked by one of the men to sit next to him on the lounge chair. ”I did so and then he told me that he was there to murder me,” Mr Dunshea told the Supreme Court.

The escort’s ”clients” were the A Current Affair reporter Ben Fordham and his producer, Andrew Byrne. Continue reading

RANDALL BENTON rbenton@sacbee.com "I love this character," says Karen Slack, who sings the role of Violetta in the Sacramento Opera's "La Traviata." "I think of Violetta as a real woman. She's the most real character I've ever had to play."

As she walks across the bare stage of the Community Center Theater during a photo shoot, soprano Karen Slack exudes unwavering confidence and regal sensuality.

Those are two attributes Slack will bring to the Sacramento Opera production of Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata.” In the production, which opens Friday, Slack will sing the most famous courtesan role in the operatic repertoire – Violetta.

The role is a demanding one for a soprano. It calls for sensitive acting that conveys a woman living outside societal norms. And it demands a versatile singer, who can sing lyrically in one act, powerfully and darkly in another.

“I love this character,” said Slack. “I think of Violetta as a real woman. She’s the most real character I’ve ever had to play.” Continue reading
